Porcelain is the 'liquid silk' of the ceramic world. Notoriously difficult & temperamental but capable of breathtaking elegance that no other earth can mimic. Working with porcelain clay feels like sculpting with softened butter, wanting to be coaxed with delicate memories. A stark bone-white canvas allows for microscopic details and a legendary translucency. When fired to maturity, it does not just hold light; it invites it in. In the kiln, the clay undergoes a dramatic transformation, shrinking significantly as it vitrifies. Because it becomes almost liquid at peak temperatures, a piece must be perfectly balanced or it will loose structure and alignment. Mastering porcelain is a high-stakes dance requiring speed and gentleness. When you succeed, you are left with something permanent, ethereal, and precious, the physical embodiment of 'strength in fragility'.
Clay: Pure porcelain from Stroke-on-Trent, UK; Fired at 1223 °C.
